How my 8 year old son paid for our family’s Disneyland vacation.
My sweet son Sampson in all of his eight year old untarnished wisdom taught me a great lesson when he dared to dream huge! One evening at a family get together, Sam and his cousin began to scheme together. The outcome was an elaborate idea to get themselves to Disneyland. He approached me with his idea and I skeptically agreed explaining though, that he would have to come up with the money himself. It seemed an insurmountable amount of money for an eight year old to raise. Sam Began to brainstorm in a fervent manner and in doing so, came up with a strategy. He asked if he could establish a chicken flock which he would be solely responsible for. He would have to tend to their needs, clean the coop, purchase the feed and make sure they were well. He would also gather, wash, and package the eggs and ultimately sell each dozen. He named every chicken, loved them and looked after every one of his lovely hens. He saved every cent he made (except money used to buy more chickens and feed). At every family gathering Sam and his cousin plotted and planned, discussing in great detail their Disneyland vacation together. In only five months Sam had created the money needed for he and his cousin to travel to Disneyland. Doing so in $3.00 increments ($3.00 per dozen). In September 2008 his dream became his reality as he walked hand in hand with his cousin through the Disneyland front gate.
It’s parked outside on my driveway…
As a senior in High School I drove a 1977 periwinkle blue convertible Volkswagen Beetle bug. I love that car. If ever a car could be described as delicious… then surely it was this car. I loved tooling around town in that car. It radiated cheerfulness. It seemed to putt down the road simply to make me happy, and it did it’s job well! Upon completing my senior year I needed to sell my love bug as I was moving back East and needed the money for the move and didn’t want to store the car in my absence. The very hour I sold the car, I became homesick. I missed its familiarity and even (silly as it sounds) friendship. In the spring of 2006 I began wondering how I could ever own another beetle bug. As a stay at home mom I could scarcely imagine what or how that dream could ever become a reality. I had a brother in law who consistently asked me why I didn’t familiarize myself the online store eBay. He knew I was frugal and often found great deals at local thrift stores or yard sales. He suggested numerous times that I try selling a few of my “wares” on eBay. I was interested in the prospect… However I continually talked myself out of it mainly because I was relatively computer un-savvy. So, for months, and maybe even a year or more I did nothing more than think of the eBay idea on occasion. However, at some point I found a chunk of bravery… from way down close to my pinky toe which somehow or another was enough to propel me forward and into the world of selling on eBay. That was several years ago, since finding that bravery I’ve gone on to set and achieve some wonderful “dream come true” kind of goals. At the very top of that “goal list” is a 1979 periwinkle blue convertible Volkswagen Beetle bug that is currently parked outside on my front driveway cheerfully waiting for our next ride together.
The Law of Attraction in Action.
My son McKay was turning eleven. His birthday falls just a few weeks past the big Christmas festivities. He had begged and pleaded for a Nintendo Wii for Christmas. However, it was brand new on the market and completely out of our price range. So, Christmas came and went with no Nintendo Wii under the tree. As McKay’s birthday was quickly approaching I began to dream and think big. I wondered how I could possibly surprise him with the “hope with all your might” Nintendo he so desperately wanted. One night I remembered we had a queen size log bed sitting outside in our garage. We had been storing it for quite a while. I hopped on KSL.com and began calling a few of the advertised Wii’s people had listed in the classified section. After maybe five or six calls I found a young man who was just getting ready to move out on his own for the first time. He had no bed but did have a brand new un-opened Nintendo Wii. He was thrilled with the idea of trading our log bed for his Wii. My son McKay will remember that Birthday the rest of his days. He got a great gift but so did I. I learned that the universe has birthday gifts a-plenty if only we ask and take action.
